Most people think that if they pay for gym membership, they’ll miraculously change and begin leading healthier, more active lives. Unfortunately, that’s far from the truth and many gym memberships go wasted. Why? Because you actually have to make a commitment and stick to your training plan if you want it to work. That’s why we recommend that you sit down with a bunch of post-its (or a sheet of paper and a pen) and jot down the reasons why you want to join the gym. Choose the reasons that really mean something to you and stick to them.

Start Small and Move Forward

A lot of gym newbies make the same mistake – they set unachievable goals, stress over not being able to meet their targets, and finally give up. When you’re starting your fitness journey, it’s very important to set realistic goals and stick to the routine. Baby steps really pay off here and create tangible, lasting results. Remember, you’re not participating in a sprint race – you’re improving your health and adjusting your whole lifestyle.

Install a Fitness App and Use It for Accountability

Accountability is a great thing. When we know that we need to report our progress and stick to a routine, we do so much more. If you don’t have a fitness accountability partner yet (or a personal trainer), installing a trusted fitness app will help. There are apps that help you create a personalized fitness routine, gradually push your limits, and stay committed.

Don’t Stress Over Certain Types of Exercises

When people think of gyms, free and machine weights come to mind. But what if you’re not the type to start doing weights straight away? No worries! There are plenty of other gym activities and exercise you can and should try, such as spinning, Zumba, yoga and other group classes.

Be More Active Throughout the Day

Another great first step of your fitness journey is becoming more aware of how active you are during your ordinary day. There are so many little things you can do to help you get fitter – leave your car further away and walk, take regular breaks and do some stretches, and increase your mindfulness in general. Be aware of your movements and make it your goal to lead a more active life.
